Jewellery Care

EMAURA jewellery is designed to be worn and enjoyed. With a little thoughtful care, you can help preserve its colour, shine and finish for longer.

Everyday care

Follow these simple steps to protect your jewellery:

  • Make jewellery the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off.

  • Remove it before showering, swimming, exercising, sleeping or doing household cleaning.

  • Avoid contact with perfume, hairspray, cosmetics, lotions, hand sanitiser and cleaning products.

  • Allow beauty products to dry completely before putting your jewellery on.

  • Wipe each piece gently after wearing it with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.

  • Handle delicate chains, clasps, posts and stone settings carefully.

Jewellery should not be considered waterproof unless the individual product description expressly says otherwise.

Sterling-silver care

Sterling silver can naturally tarnish when exposed to air, moisture, perspiration and everyday chemicals. This is a normal characteristic of genuine silver and does not mean that the jewellery is poor quality.

For unplated sterling silver:

  • Polish gently with a cloth specifically designed for sterling silver.

  • Use light pressure and avoid rubbing delicate stones or settings.

  • Never use toothpaste, baking soda, bleach or abrasive household cleaners.

  • Ensure the jewellery is completely dry before storing it.

Silver dips and chemical cleaning solutions should not be used on plated jewellery or pieces containing delicate stones.

Gold-plated jewellery

Gold plating is a fine layer of gold applied over another metal. All plated finishes can gradually change or wear over time, particularly on areas exposed to frequent contact or friction.

To preserve your gold-plated jewellery:

  • Keep it away from water, perfume, lotions and chemicals.

  • Wipe it gently with a soft, dry cloth after wearing.

  • Do not use a silver-polishing cloth, metal polish or abrasive cleaner.

  • Avoid excessive rubbing, as this can gradually remove the plated finish.

  • Store each piece separately to reduce scratching and friction.

How quickly plating wears depends on factors including frequency of wear, storage, skin chemistry and exposure to moisture.

Rhodium-plated jewellery

Rhodium plating gives sterling silver a bright, polished finish and provides an additional protective layer. Like other plated finishes, it may gradually wear with regular use.

Clean rhodium-plated jewellery only with a soft, dry or slightly damp lint-free cloth. Avoid silver-polishing cloths, chemical dips and abrasive cleaners, as these may damage the plating.

Stones and zircon

Zircon, cubic zirconia and natural stones should be handled gently to protect their surfaces and settings.

  • Wipe them carefully with a soft, slightly damp cloth.

  • Avoid soaking stone-set jewellery.

  • Keep stones away from chemicals, cosmetics and sudden changes in temperature.

  • Do not use steam or ultrasonic cleaners unless a professional jeweller has confirmed they are suitable.

  • Avoid knocks and impacts that could loosen, chip or scratch a stone.

Natural stones may have individual care requirements. Contact support@emaura.co.uk if you need guidance for a particular piece.

Pearls

Pearls are naturally delicate and require a little extra care.

  • Put pearls on after applying perfume, hairspray and cosmetics.

  • Wipe them gently after wearing with a soft, slightly damp cloth.

  • Never use silver polish, chemical cleaners, steam or ultrasonic equipment.

  • Do not soak pearl jewellery.

  • Store pearls separately in a soft pouch to protect them from scratches.

Safe storage

Store jewellery in a cool, clean and dry place away from direct sunlight, humidity and sudden temperature changes. Bathrooms are not recommended because of their moisture levels.

Keep individual pieces in separate pouches or compartments to prevent scratching and tangling. Fasten necklaces and bracelets before storing them, and lay delicate chains flat where possible.

Make sure jewellery is completely dry before placing it into its pouch or box.

Check your jewellery regularly

Before wearing your jewellery, occasionally check its clasps, posts, hinges and stone settings. If something appears loose, bent or damaged, stop wearing the piece to prevent further damage or loss.

Please do not repeatedly bend or reshape adjustable jewellery, as this can weaken the metal over time.

Natural changes over time

Tarnishing, fine surface marks and the gradual wear of plated finishes can occur naturally as jewellery is worn. Following this guidance will help slow these changes and keep your jewellery looking its best.

If you believe your jewellery has developed a fault rather than normal signs of wear, please contact support@emaura.co.uk with your order number and clear photographs where possible. Your statutory rights are not affected.
